Jon Shevell, Vice Chairman and a Director of New England Motor Freight (NEMF) and the Shevell Group of Companies in Elizabeth NJ, died in Los Angeles on March 3. He was 50.
Jon was originally from Edison, NJ and lived the last 25 years in New York City.
Jon was a graduate of John P. Stevens High School in Edison NJ where he was an outstanding scholar athlete and was elected to the Alumni Hall of Fame. "Jon was a warm and caring individual, who never tired of reaching out to young people," said Fred Riccio, a retired principal at John P. Stevens, who was guidance counselor during Shevell's high school years. He also graduated from Tufts University where he excelled in basketball and earned his Masters Degree. Through the years, Jon gave many lectures to athletes in high school, college and sports camp settings.
Following his graduation from Tufts University and brief career playing professional basketball in Europe,Jon joined New England Motor Freight (NEMF). At NEMF, Jon served as vice chairman and executive vice president, responsible for NEMF's major accounts. He was regarded as an industry leader in the areas of sales and marketing.
"Jon was a catalyst in much of the growth of the company," said Jon's father, Mike Shevell, Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of NEMF and the Shevell Group, which has grown to include 10,000 pieces of equipment and 40 terminals throughout the Northeast, Midwest, Puerto Rico, Canada and through partnerships servicing 95% of the continental USA.
He was the recipient of numerous honors related to his professional and philanthropic endeavors.
